Learn & Grow vs Blame & Train with Debriefing!

Learn & Grow vs Blame & Train with Debriefing!

The goal of every Leader should be to make their team better.  No matter what line of work you are in, a Leader’s job is to find ways to make their people better…better in performance, execution, and job satisfaction.  Any good Leader is constantly trying to find more effective ways to sharpen the axe for their teams.

One of the most powerful tools I have experienced in making a team better is the DEBRIEF.  So much so, that I often keep this as one of the last and most hard-hitting points in my keynotes.  It’s so popular and so effective, I even offer a whole workshop around debriefing.

As Fighter Pilots, we DEBRIEFED after every mission…combat or training. What happened, why did it happen, and what lessons did we learn to improve upon next time. More importantly, when that debriefing room door shut, rank came off. We admitted mistakes we made and observed in execution. An environment of open and honest communication where the goal was NOT about BLAMING, but rather LEARNING.

The ability to lead a good debrief just doesn’t happen overnight, and it doesn’t happen without a solid structure and method to and effective debrief.  It’s not natural human nature either to talk about our mis-steps in front of peers.  There is a way to do this, and do it right.  And when you can harness this, it will improve your team’s performance, and increase the buy-in and empowerment of your people.

Imagine what kind of team that would look like if you had a LEARN and GROW approach versus a BLAME and TRAIN approach.  Knowing how to IMPROVE through DEBRIEFs is the key.

If this sounds like it could help you or your teams, I would love to have a chat!
